Fused Ankle

Fused Ankle Solution

When an ankle is fused together it locks the natural motion that existed in the ankle joint.  This can cause a variety of problems and stresses to the foot, leg, and back.  The most common stress is the heel and forefoot area.

Additional Stress to the Foot

The heel and forefoot required to carry extra load when the ankle is fused/fixed.  The heel strikes harder than normal because the forefoot does not drop upon heel strike and the forefoot is also stressed fore exactly the same reason during the pushoff part of the walking or gait cycle.

Additional Stress to the Body

Often stress is felt up the body with a fused ankle as the body does not flow easily when walking.  The fused ankle creates a stop and go type rotation rather than a flowing motion when walking.  This adds additional stress to the knees, hips and lower back.

Solutions

The easiest non-invasive and most cost-effective solution is footwear that provides artificial rotation in the heel area.  A shoe with a rounded or rocker in the heel will help, but the best solution is the patented Z-CoiL Footwear. Z-CoiL has a spring built into the heel.  The spring is very flexible and will bend backward upon heel strike and then forward upon toe off.  It creates a very natural type walking motion when walking with a fused ankle.

The result is simply amazing for those with fused ankles.  Originally developed for runners Z-CoiL has become wildly popular among nurses, teaches, retail workers, travelers and those with trauma to the feet, legs or back. In addition to the spring heel in the back of the shoe, the forefoot rocker bottom sole provides additional cushioning and facilitates a smooth gait to help you rotate off the toe.

HOW THE SPRING HEEL WORKS

The Z-CoiL spring is very unique in the shoe industry.  The spring upon impact collapses in the back during each heel strike reducing impact to the body.  As it collapses the spring rotates backward allowing the foot to strike the ground, without requiring the ankle joint to rotate.

HOW THE FOREFOOT ROCKER WORKS

During the normal gait cycle, impact is transferred from the heel towards the toes to propel you forward. Weight is transferred both up the body to the ankles, knees, hips and lower back as well as forward into the forefoot and toes. The spring-loaded heel both reduces impact to protect joints in the foot and lower body and returns energy to help make forward motion easier. Full impact and returned energy can be problematic if the weight lingers at any point along the foot, but the forefoot rocker bottom sole is curved to quickly transfer impact from the heel to the forefoot and speed your foot through toe-off.

GREAT FOR A FULLY FUSED ANKLE!

I’m 31, and have had 17 surgeries. My left ankle is fused, I’ve had left knee and hip surgeries, and have two spinal cord stimulators. Walking is tough to say the least, and especially trying to walk somewhat normal so I don’t screw other things up. These shoes help me a ton. Walking up a slight hill was somewhat impossible before and now I can with some ease. The arch insert that I got with the shoe is fantastic as well. The shoes definitely eliminate and fully absorb the shock my foot would normally feel as I tried to walk. I also feel it work for my knee and hip as well. Driving isn’t difficult in the shoes either. If you have foot knee hip or back issues, these shoes will definitely help you!  Thank you! Extremely great customer service, and a great product!

GREAT FOR FUSED ANKLE

I'm struggling with TTF (tibia talus fibula) fused ankle. So far these shoes have helped better than any other rocker sole ones

I HAVE A FUSED LEFT

I have a fused left ankle and a partial fused right. I've also had 2 surgeries on my back. I need another but I'm putting it off as long as possible. I read on the internet how someone else with a fused ankle could walk easier with z coil shoes so I went to a store in Gatlinburg Tn and tried them. They were wonderful! I could walk so much better and without all the pain. I can not wear any other type of shoe without making my pain much worse. They have helped me be able to put the surgery on my back off. Z coil shoes really do work. Thanks!

I HAVE A FUSED ANKLE

"I have a fused ankle and would pay $300 or more for custom shoes. The did not always work. Then I found Z-CoiL. I have been wearing them for 5 years and have 3 pair. I can walk normally because of the spring and they cut all my foot pain. My left foot arch is flatter and protruding more due to my surgery, which the Z-CoiL people adjust for with heat. I tell people all the time about Z-CoiL. The spring sometimes catches snow in the winter (we live in Colorado) so I might get the enclosed heel in the future."
